Proverbs 31 is one of the most inspiring passages of Scripture. To me, it’s almost like a love note from God, gently reminding me of my calling. Proverbs 31:10-31 details the daily life of a godly woman. We’ve all heard the phrase “Proverbs 31 woman,” and maybe you’ve heard someone described that way. A quick glance over these verses might not seem to yield much, until you take the time to consider what God’s message to us is. We ladies have a very special calling, and it’s one that our society is quick to cheapen. The Lord created us to love and nurture our husbands and children and to care for our families with tenderness and compassion amid a world that seeks to weaken marriage and motherhood. These couple of verses are rich in wisdom for us. Here’s what God has to say about a godly woman, and I’ve offered a modern day interpretation of what we can do to be the Proverbs 31 women God has called us to be.
About a godly woman, God says in verses 10-28:
“she is worth far more than rubies” ~ she is is priceless because her heart is tender and her spirit is humble amid a world of darkness. Your faithfulness to God and to your family is rare. Don’t miss an opportunity to love the people around you. Regardless of what the world tells you, don’t lose sight of who you are and Whose you are. You are the daughter of a King, the wife of a man God has given you, the mother to children He’s entrusted you with.
“her husband has full confidence in her and lacks no good thing” ~ she is a faithful and loving wife, and she treasures her husband’s heart. Learn your husband’s love language, and speak it fluently. In this way, you will help him become a better husband and father. With you as his support, he can accomplish anything.
“she brings her husband good, not harm, all the days of her life” ~ she puts the needs of her husband above her own and is his helper. Love your husband selflessly and unconditionally. Don’t get caught up in his flaws and mistakes, but appreciate the man he is and affirm him. Respect him, honor him, rejoice with him, and pray over him daily. Marriage is one of God’s greatest blessings.
“she works with eager hands” ~ she is passionate about the work God has called her to do. Do not become hardened by life, but bear the tasks The Lord has set before you with excitement and dedication.
“she brings food from afar and rises early to provide food for her family” ~ she makes healthy meals a priority, and buys the best foods she can afford. Nourish your family. Equip your husband and children for the day ahead of them. Make family dinners a priority, and you will nourish their spirits and hearts as well.
“she plants a vineyard out of her earnings” ~ she uses her money wisely and saves for her children’s future. Enjoy the financial blessings God gives you while praying that He’ll give you wisdom and discernment. Tithe off of what you and your husband bring in every month and seek to honor Him with your income. Take every opportunity to bless others.
“she sets about her work vigorously” ~ she works with all of her heart, as working for The Lord and not for men. Do everything to the best of your ability, even the things you think no one will ever notice.
“she sees that she profits from her work and her lamp does not go out at night” ~ she recognizes the goodness of God in her life and how He blesses the work of her hands. Be a committed wife and mother both day and night. Your efforts will be rewarded. God has promised you He will throw open the floodgates of heaven to bless you (Malachi 3:10).
“she holds a staff in her hand and grasps a spindle with her fingers” ~ she is strong yet gentle. You are talented and very capable. You can do whatever God has called you to do, because He’s equipped you with every necessary skill.
“she opens her arms to the poor and extends her hand to the needy” ~ she is generous with her time and money. Be the hands and feet of Jesus wherever you go. Teach your children while they are very young that it is better to give than to receive. People will see Christ when you share your time and money with others. You are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14).
“she does not fear when snow comes, for her family is clothed in scarlet” ~ she is not consumed with worry. She doesn’t crumble when trials come because she knows Who her God is. Do not be overtaken by perfectionism. Struggles will come and go, but your God is sovereign over them all. Take captive every thought, and remember Whose hand you’re holding each step of the way.
“she makes coverings for her beds and is clothed in purple” ~ she lovingly cares for her home and makes it a place where her family feels loved. Whether your house is big or small, dedicate it to The Lord. Use the home He has given you for His purposes.
“her husband is respected at the city gate” ~ she never speaks badly of her husband. Refrain from saying negative things about your husband. Affirm him in front of your family and friends, even if he is not present. Remember that words spoken kindly are as precious as gold and silver (Proverbs 25:11) – how sweet these will be to your husband’s heart.
“she makes linen garments and sells them, supplying the merchants with sashes” ~ she uses the talents God has given her. Thank God for the talents He has blessed you with, and use them for His glory. Acknowledge your husbands talents, and help your children realize theirs. You are their biggest fan, and you can help them become everything God has called them to be.
“she is clothed with strength and dignity and laughs at the days to come” ~ she is confident, rooted and built up in her faith. Don’t let anxious thoughts steal your joy. Recall that your God has gone before you and nothing can touch you before going through His hands first. Remember in sickness, loss, and heartache that the One who spread the stars in the sky is carrying you.
“she speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue” ~ she speaks lovingly to her husband and children. Encourage them and guide them. You want what is best for them. Pray that God will give you the words to speak, and He’ll use you in a mighty way. Let your children hear you speaking well of others.
“she watches over the affairs of her household and is not idle” ~ she doesn’t waste time envying others. Be grateful for everything you have and care for what God has given you. Do not spend your time thinking of what someone else has. Instead of letting jealousy take root in your life, recognize that you have been given exactly what you need. You are perfection in God’s eyes, for you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).
Wow. What a calling. And what does God say of a woman like this? He says that her children arise and call her blessed, and that her husband praises her (Proverbs 31:28). Verse 29 says “many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Be the woman who surpasses the standards of the world. Women who fear The Lord leave a legacy. If you have a Proverbs 31 woman in your life, thank God for her, for you have a rare and beautiful treasure.
